While walking home from the plaza in San Miguel de Allende I saw a mother with her little girl holding a plastic bag with a goldfish inside. The wind suddenly picked up and moved their colorful skirts to one side. The green scales on the left is snake skin which symbolizes rebirth, the water they walk on abundance, the butterflies cultural richness and the net brings together the different layers or aspects of the indigenous life.
Mientras volvía a casa desde la plaza de San Miguel de Allende, vi a una madre con su hija pequeña sosteniendo una bolsa de plástico con un pez de colores dentro. El viento se levantó de repente y movió sus coloridas faldas hacia un lado. Las escamas verdes de la izquierda son pieles de serpiente que simbolizan el renacimiento, el agua sobre la que caminan la abundancia, las mariposas la riqueza cultural y la red reúne las diferentes capas o aspectos de la vida indígena.

Unfiltered and bold is how I have experienced the look in the indigenous children in Mexico. They hold such power and beauty in their eyes. They are witnesses to so much that goes on, both the magic and the tragedy. Even when they do not have a voice that is heard they still have their eyes that take in the world around them and communicate through them.
Sin filtro y con audacia es como he experimentado la mirada de los niños indígenas en México. Tienen tanto poder y belleza en sus ojos. Son testigos de muchas cosas que suceden, tanto de la magia como de la tragedia. Incluso cuando no tienen una voz que se escuche, siguen teniendo sus ojos que captan el mundo que les rodea y se comunican a través de ellos.

Colgo los tenis, or she hung the tennis shoes - is a common expression when somebody passes on. Life can be ephemeral and precious especially in countries like Mexico. The hanging shoes with tied shoe laces over electric cables over streets are a constant reminder of that.
Colgo los tenis, es una expresión común cuando alguien fallece. La vida puede ser efímera y preciosa, especialmente en países como México. Los zapatos colgados con los cordones atados sobre los cables eléctricos de las calles son un recordatorio constante de ello.

While camping at el Sotano de las Golondrinas, a group of children from a village higher on the ridge where I had been hiking a day before woke me up early in the morning with giggles. They lived surrounded by beauty and an abundance of freedom and were not afraid to explore our camp. I took my Pentax out and seized the shot with that soft morning light glowing on their faces. Her expression seemed to be one of shyness and guardedness yet she would only get closer and sit in stillness.
Mientras acampaba en el Sótano de las Golondrinas, un grupo de niños de un pueblo situado más arriba en la cresta donde había estado de excursión un día antes me despertó de madrugada con risas. Vivían rodeados de belleza y abundancia de libertad y no tenían miedo de explorar nuestro campamento. Saqué mi Pentax y aproveché la toma con esa suave luz matutina que brillaba en sus rostros. Su expresión parecía ser de timidez y de guardia, pero sólo se acercaba y se quedaba quieta.

Adopted from catholic virgen Mary and integrated with indigenous symbols of the coatlicue and coyolxauhqui goddesses.
Te Digo
Is a portrait that has a face like so many children in Mexico. You see them as vendors, running on the dirt roads of their villages or under the majestic trees of the mayan jungle.They are curious and playful and their stories are of resilience. It is a way of characterizing a child with the power of words carrying the richness of their history.
Yet they are full of life as they sprint across the plaza in front of the catholic basilica, play games with simple objects and are smart as only they can be. They come from such a rich background and cultural history that it is hard to imagine these great nations with amnesia of their heritage.

Ana, a girl from el Sotano de las Golondrinas, was a curious and quiet girl that woke me up one morning after sleeping under the stars. She had come down early from the ridge where she lived with her family and explored our camp. The background represents my often playful encounters with these beautiful and fierceless children.
Ana, una niña del Sótano de las Golondrinas, era una chica curiosa y tranquila que me despertó una mañana después de dormir bajo las estrellas. Había bajado temprano de la cresta donde vivía con su familia y exploraba nuestro campamento. El fondo representa mis encuentros, a menudo juguetones, con estos hermosos y fieros niños.
